The spinal cord is the major bundle of nerves that carry nerve signals to and from the brain and to the rest of the body. Most voluntary processes such as walking, arm movments, sensation, etc. are relayed through this bundle of nerves. The spinal cord is surrounded by a ring of bones called vertebra, more commonly known as "disks". These vertebra provide a protective armor for the spinal cord, however, a damage to the vertebra does not necessarily signal damage to the spinal cord.
A Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that impairs some normal function of the human body such as mobility or sensation. The most frequent causes of these types of damage are traumatic accidents such as car accidents or falls, or diseases such as spina bifida. The extent of damage from these types of injury may be mild (such as losing sensation) to severe (paralysis).
Currently there are no cures for SCI. With the exception of steroid injections, which reduce swelling in the spinal cord, people who suffer from SCI have no medical alternatives. Although current research with stem cells looks very promising, a cure is not in sight.
PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY
It is important to know your rights when you have been injured. If you were injured from someone else's negligence, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. A personal injury may result in medical bills, lost wages, and other damages that you may recover from a negligent party.
