A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is damage to the brian as a result of some traumatic incident, such as a car accident or fall, that impairs some normal function of the human body or results in death. Some non-traumatic types of brain injury include brain tumors or strokes.

In general, the brain controls Four (4) different types of functions:

  1. Cognitive - Retaining memory (short or long term), the ability to use language, and the ability to process information.

  2. Perceptual - Vision, Hearing, Taste, Smell, Touch, and Balance.

  3. Motor - Using arms, legs, hands, fingers, toes, etc.; walking, movement of the head.

  4. Behavioral - Emotions, Behavior, Personality, etc.

A TBI may effect some or all of these types of functions. Some forms of TBI may only be temporary and alleviate over time. However, most types of TBI are permanent. There are currently no cures for TBI.
